Greetings from the Garden!  This CSA box has onions, garlic, winter tomatoes, squash, the last of the sweet potatoes, winter kohlrabi, beets, and cabbage. Field Notes.  We are glad to see the snow; it will act as an insulating blanket and slow the descent of the frost into the ground.  It also provides a check against erosion and will provide moisture to the soil.  Seed inventory is done, and next we hit the seed catalogs.  …

Break from the Root Cellar – Squash and Onions Come Inside

Yesterday while Ken was at a bee workshop, I moved the squash and onions inside to the north east corner of the main floor.  The forecast of low temperatures below twenty degrees provided incentive!  The squash had been on racks covered with a tarp and with a light inside the racks for heat.  I packed bulb crates and got them inside. Onions and Squash Still Outside.

The onions and squash are still outside curing.  Ken has created an insulated space for the onions using hay bales and the ground heat.  We then covered the onions with plywood and tarp.        The squash is in the racks with a tarp to keep it out of the wind and a light to provide heat to maintain temperature above freezing.         Once it gets really cold and the house …

Greetings from the Garden!  The box this week has salad mix, potatoes, tomatoes, squash, onions, garlic, carrots, and cabbage         Field Notes.  Ken continues planting for the salad mixes, and has been making pottery.  Soon he will start full season crops like onions and celery and parsley.  Then it will be one planting after the next.  Soon after that Ken will be seeding and transplanting in green houses.  This time of year …

Winter Squash in Racks

Ken likes to wait for frost to harvest winter squash for two reasons: the vines and leaves die back so the squash is easier to find, and many people believe a frost hardens the shell and sweetens the flavor.   Ken got two loads of squash in the yard.  I got the onions and garlic out of the racks and he put the squash into the racks.
