Cool Enough to Bake

The weather has been cool enough for baking. That’s unusual in July. I seized the chance and made some masa (corn) blueberry muffins Ken grew flint and dent corn and I make masa. Each batch I make some fresh tortillas and then freeze some one cup balls for batches of muffins. There are 1 c masa, 1 c kefir, 1 egg, 1 c flour (wheat or rolled buckwheat groats, 3T lard (mine), 1/2 t baking …

Reading a Best Seller

After hearing an interview with the author, I decided to read this book. It’s a fast read, and not newsworthy for me. But the message was a good reminder. Women, listen to that inner voice, not the many loud ones outside of you that tell what you should do and be.

My Own Man Woman Person Camera TV

Today while I was hanging laundry I discovered something On the upright a group of paper wasps were making a nest. A while back Loyal had removed the coconut shell and bamboo wind chimes on the clothesline where they were making a nest. That was brave. And they were back to rebuild on the metal pole. And here comes the memory and list. It has been years since one time Ken was out of town …

Thank You to My Sister and Friends

It all began with my wanting to play When I’m Sixty-Four for my birthday dinner last March. I found the sheet music online for a small fee. I also found FREE music. Wow. That pile grew to include favorites like Home on the Range, Simple Gifts, Amazing Grace and even a couple opera arias. Then my friend Dianne sent this Disney song book for the clarinet. Starting with When You Wish upon a Star, I …

Stacking Wood

Kind people have been cutting and splitting wood for the winter. Loyal drives up a trailer of wood, and I stack it. The wood shed is filling up. Monday I emptied a trailer and abracadabra! Another one appeared Since rain was forecast Monday night, I covered the wood with tin This morning was cool and relatively bug-free so I started in stacking. Progress! The oldest lightest wood and new kindling are almost at two ricks …

Bill Holm, My Hero

My friend Paulette loaned me a book almost a year ago. Since Ken died I often have difficulty focusing to read anything longer than a magazine article. But I do love this author, and have enjoyed everything I have read that he wrote, each time we saw him in person, and his tribute at Plymouth Congregational Church in Minneapolis. Each time I began to read this, I would hear his voice and miss both the …

A Couple Lessons from My Covid – 19 Scare

A little over a week ago I had an unexplained fever at bedtime. The next morning I awoke with a temperature of 98.3. In the old days – four months ago – I would have happily proceeded with my day. Friends my age and older pushed me to get a covid – 19 test. I did the screening and results also suggested a test. A call to the clinic led to an online site for …

Small Maintenance Tasks Now Fall to Me

A fan stopped working. It was frozen; it needed cleaning and oiling. It’s something Ken used to do each spring and I forgot about it. Until the fan didn’t work. So, I took off the plastic screens and cleaned them Then it was take off the fan blade and clean it. Put down newspaper, clean the frame and wipe dust off the motor Get some oil in that joint And on the other side Replace …

My Hero

Oscar is the third farm dog here. He is now ten years old, and moving toward retirement. In the past we got a pup when the working dog turned ten; the older dog helped train the younger one. But with Loyal’s older dog here, and my desire to travel, it doesn’t seem right to get a pup Oscar has seen many changes: he lost Ken, his main person, adapted to Loyal and his dog, Pilgrim’s …
