Harvest Newsletter

Greetings from the Garden!  This week’s CSA box has lettuce, kale, arugula, French breakfast radishes, green onions, garlic scapes, snap peas, carrots, parsley, strawberries, and the last of the asparagus.

Field Notes.  Ken is wrapping up asparagus season with weeding and mulching the beds with the assistance of his faithful helper, Oscar the dog!  The plant shoots will grow and send energy to the roots for next year’s crop.  One of the most crucial aspects of growing asparagus is to stay ahead of the weeds!  Each season Ken weeds and either mulches or plants a cover crop to reduce weeds.

One of Ken’s weekly tasks is tying up tomatoes.  They are growing and blooming.  Tomatoes like warm weather so they are a bit slower this year.  That cool weather means other crops are happy.  The lettuce has stayed mild and hasn’t bolted.  The peas are starting to bloom for another picking.  The radishes are just beautiful!

From the Kitchen.  This week Ken has put in some long days.  I tend to want to eat earlier rather than later so I make a “field lunch” and bring it to him.  This week we have beautiful arugula and other greens so I made some noodles…

and a Bechamel sauce with butter, green onions, flour, and milk.

Then I tossed in chopped herbs and greens like arugula, chard, ad kale and then tossed with some grated cheese.  Ken had bought a sweet potato so I added some cooked slices with butter salt and pepper as a side.
