Harvest Newsletter

Greetings from the Garden! This week’s CSA box has tomatoes, peppers, onions, garlic, potatoes, salad turnips, red radishes, beet thins, carrots, cucumbers and/or zucchini and herbs

Field Notes.  No frost yet!  Usually by this time we have had at least a nip of frost.  Soon we will start the “big dig” and getting roots in the root cellar for the winter.  Ken is still picking all those summer crops and clearing space.  Once we have a frost we will be moving the mobile high tunnel over the fall greens – but they don’t need the heat or protection yet.

Enjoy these summer favorites this week as the end is in sight!  The zucchini and cucumbers are not blooming, so we have what is setting fruit on the vine and that’s all, folks – until next year.

From the Kitchen.  Ken fermented some peppers.  Then he ran them in the food processor and food mill for a hot sauce.

Then he bottled it

I made a tomato salad with a dressing of olive oil, balsamic vinegar, sliced onion and chopped basil for a recent pot luck.

Ken has been the soup master.  Each week he takes all the culled vegetables from harvest and comes up with a delicious soup.  We like having soup at any meal.  While we were in Japan the typical breakfast was rice and miso soup.  It is great to start a cool morning’s work with warm food in one’s stomach.  Sometimes we poach eggs in  soup – tasty! I also made a hearty beef soup with onion, garlic, kohlrabi, carrot, and added some parsley when I served it.

‘Til Next Week,   Judith and the Gang
