Harvest Newsletter

Greetings from the Garden!  This week’s CSA box has tomatoes, potatoes, beets, chard, zucchini, cucumbers, green peppers, beans, Walla Walla sweet onions, and parsley.

Field Notes.  Ken has been transplanting fall crops.  We dug the garlic and it is curing on racks.  Ken keeps up with weekly tasks like tying up tomatoes.

Fun fact: Daylight shortens three minutes each day during August.  Several cultures have a harvest holiday in August; In old Celtic they called it Lunasa. As farmers we really notice those midpoints between solstice and equinox.  For us that is the drama.  The solstice or equinox is the end-start point of the cycles – shortest or longest day, even daylight and starlight.

From the Kitchen. This time of year I spend some time blanching and freezing some beans and broccoli for future use.  Some people freeze grated zucchini for future zucchini bread.

We have had a lettuce gap.  In times of raw greens gap I either braise or steam greens – basically cook to wilt – and then add a snazzy dressing like a creamy cheesy sauce or a zippy vinaigrette.  I like to contrast the main dish.

‘Til Next Week, Judith and the Gang
