It all began with my wanting to play When I’m Sixty-Four for my birthday dinner last March. I found the sheet music online for a small fee. I also found FREE music. Wow.
That pile grew to include favorites like Home on the Range, Simple Gifts, Amazing Grace and even a couple opera arias.
Then my friend Dianne sent this Disney song book for the clarinet. Starting with When You Wish upon a Star, I began practising them.
And THEN my sister started surfing the internet for fake books and real books in B flat. These are compilations of songs. The first to arrive was the Jazz Fakebook
And THEN, the Ultimate Fakebook. The history of these fakebooks is that musicians bought the compilations from someone who may not have paid royalties, and changed a note or two in each song. Most of the songs’ composers are now paid. Many of the songs have expired copyrights
And finally the Dixieland Realbook arrived from my sister. There is of course a BIT of overlap, but I now have a lot of choice on what to work on playing now! This week’s new songs are Summertime (Gershwin) and Making Whoopee and Our Love is Here to Stay
